My three-decade journey in sales has been a fascinating mosaic, woven with vibrant successes and the stark threads of failure. These challenging periods, often seen as mere ‘downtimes,’ have frequently led me down paths less traveled, far from conventional wisdom.
A Quick Heads-Up: The perspectives I share here on Dotcombaron aren’t pulled from textbooks. They spring purely from my own experiences – the unique ways I’ve tackled obstacles and seized rare opportunities. These aren’t your everyday encounters, and the solutions aren’t found in a standard guide.
Think of this blog as a trusted guidepost on your journey, offering insights and inspiration, rather than a direct consultancy service.
Today, I’m peeling back the layers to reveal what truly matters to safeguard when you’re facing a downturn. You might be surprised by the incredible benefits that often blossom from these difficult moments.
Because, let’s be honest, staring down the possibility of losing your home can be an immense mental battle. It leaves you feeling exposed, and unfortunately, can attract those who might try to exploit your vulnerability.
Every single story shared on Dotcombaron is a direct echo from my real-life adventures, penned from my current home base in Malta.
So, let’s get straight to it. Dahlan here, ready to share some candid truths.
When life throws you a curveball and everything feels as if it’s spiraling into chaos, you’ll discover some astonishingly valuable assets hidden within your own life:
- The people who genuinely stand by you.
- The depth of your own resilience.
- A clearer vision of the person you are destined to become.
The True North of Your Connections
Let’s dive right into that first point. And don’t worry, this isn’t going to be a somber reflection. In fact, hitting rock bottom can be one of the most profound and beautiful experiences you’ll ever encounter—whether it happens once, twice, or, in my case, a few times over.
When circumstances strip away all the superficial layers, who truly stands by you becomes crystal clear. Beyond your immediate family (if you have one), the individuals with genuine care will step forward. Conversely, those who only hovered during your peak moments, perhaps hoping to catch a stray spark of your success, will inevitably show their true colors and fade into the background.
These challenging periods, much like any significant life shift, act as a necessary cleansing. They help you untangle yourself from distractions that clutter your path and pull you away from your true purpose. It might sting at first, but believe me, with time, you’ll experience an incredible sense of liberation.
You’ll feel a hundred times better than before, brimming with a genuine zest for life, embracing the Dotcombaron way.
Remember that ‘friend’ who always seemed to forget their wallet? Or the one who only materialized when you were hosting another celebration? Deep down, you probably always suspected they were holding you back. And now? Those ties are finally severed, clearing your way forward.
Discovering Your Inner Fortitude
If you’ve never faced the harsh realities of homelessness or severe financial distress, I genuinely encourage you to consider embracing bolder risks. For those fortunate enough to navigate a period of significant challenge, you won’t just gain a sharper perspective of yourself; you’ll also uncover the astonishing resilience of your own body.
Beyond that, your inherent value to others often magnifies exponentially. You’ll not only see it but truly feel it. After all, life speaks through the energy and frequency of the vibrations you send out into the world, often more powerfully than any words.
As beautifully captured in one of Og Mandino’s timeless books: "This too shall pass…"
Indeed, your body is capable of far more than waking up daily in a soft, luxurious bed, cooking on an electric ceramic stovetop, or enjoying a warm toilet seat.
Your physical self can endure remarkable stress, such as:
- Incredibly long walks—whether it’s to the supermarket, to that crucial meeting that could resolve a temporary cash flow crunch, or hours spent moving between potential places to sleep.
- Consciously skipping a few meals because you wisely chose to invest your last resources in an app or tool that could automate your outreach efforts.
- For those who may not know me well yet, I’ve consistently maintained my training. I focus primarily on calisthenics and runs, even when hungry. Being hungry affects your body in unique ways (a quick note: I’m not a dietitian, so please don’t attempt this unless absolutely necessary).
From my personal experience with significant hunger, I found my body underwent a profound cleansing process, replacing old cells with new ones. And the result? The very act of eating transformed into an entirely different experience.
Allow me to explain: I shifted from merely eating whatever tasted good, regardless of its nutritional value, to intensely focusing on the actual benefits. Does it fuel me? Does it keep my mind clear? Will it sustain my body’s energy?
I started listening deeply to my body’s specific needs—a little more protein, some extra carbs, more fruits… and perhaps chocolate four times a year. No, I never had a sweet tooth to begin with, so that wasn’t much of a sacrifice!
The Unbreakable Power of Your Mind
I’ve always cultivated a ‘no-limit’ mindset, an almost instinctual ‘screw it, let’s go for it’ attitude that revealed itself from a very young age. Now, at age 42, I can confidently declare:
"I am utterly obsessed with continuous growth, relentless personal development, and delivering undeniable value, no matter the challenges, the adversity, or the circumstances. I will prevail and fulfill my purpose."
Navigating the Downward Spiral: Your Essential Safeguards
Through my own challenging trials, I’ve distilled a few critical lessons:
Resist the urge to simply chase money:
Ah yes, when I shifted my sole focus to chasing money, I noticed a distinct pattern: I began attracting individuals who were equally fixated on money, and often, little else.
Why is that a potential pitfall?
That’s an excellent question with a clear answer: People whose primary drive is purely financial gain often don’t make good long-term partners for developing new business projects. Their focus tends to be on quick returns, and the moment a venture demands adaptation or a slight pivot, they’re likely to disengage, potentially leaving you in a worse position than before.
So, instead of fixating on money or impulsively launching new ventures (unless you’re genuinely building something industry-changing), consider stepping back. Focus on isolating yourself and diligently following these steps:
- Take a sincere moment to reflect on where things veered off course—acknowledge it fully, extract the lessons, and then metaphorically sweep it under the carpet.
- Recall and gather the ‘why-it-worked’ elements from your past successes, then amplify them with your current knowledge and wisdom.
- Leverage your cumulative experiences and the insights gained to significantly enhance the value you bring to interactions with others. Whether you’re struggling or thriving, offering genuine value often ensures your fundamental needs are met.
As I mentioned earlier, my personal circumstances often deviate from the norm because I’m willing to commit myself to fulfilling my purpose at levels that might seem beyond conventional belief. However, absorb this truth from me—most people possess more inherent advantages than they typically realize:
Allow me to offer a few quick examples:
- Do you have family in your corner? You’re already one step ahead of where I’ve often found myself.
- Do you know your parents and recognize the traits you share? That’s two steps ahead.
- Are you currently driving a car, even with some financial challenges? That’s three steps ahead.
- Do you know where you’ll be sleeping tonight? That’s four steps ahead.
I could continue, but the reality is that most individuals reading this post are in a significantly stronger position than I was during various rebuilds from scratch. And if you happen to be among that smaller percentage facing extreme hardship, please reach out—we should explore potential joint ventures.
(I’m perpetually on the lookout for that rare breed who are truly obsessed!)
A Bold, Unfiltered Truth: Keep the ‘knuckleheads’ out of your life before their actions and toxic mindsets begin to erode your own progress.
They will subtly leech your knowledge, siphon your valuable ideas, and most critically, drain your precious energy and finite time.
I understand you likely possess a high degree of empathy and a natural inclination to share, but exercise caution with that trait. For a while, dial it back, at least until you can comfortably afford to "lose" a few seconds on someone who is merely a time-waster.
So, how do you effectively filter out these energy sinks?
Let me share a few practical pointers on how I distinguish the unproductive from the truly driven individuals.
First, a dose of reality: Genuinely obsessed individuals are rare and often geographically dispersed. Let that sink in for a moment.
Okay, here’s my top 5 filter list:
- People who are late from the very beginning—10 minutes late without any prior notice? That’s a clear signal. You’re out.
- People who see your message but take days to respond? Another red flag. You’re out.
- People who consistently present excuses to avoid taking action on tasks you’ve mutually agreed upon? No progress there. You’re out.
- People who conjure up excuses for not maintaining their physical training? A lack of discipline often extends beyond the gym. You’re out.
- Finally, observe closely whom they surround themselves with and how they genuinely treat others. Character reveals itself here.
You must maintain incredibly firm boundaries here. If individuals struggle to manage simple responsibilities, they are highly unlikely to handle serious issues effectively. You need to fiercely protect your future self, even if it means making tough choices and distancing yourself from those who love to slack off.
Have no remorse for the slackers, because they will inevitably drag you down and leave you with their accumulated messes. And trust me, cleaning up someone else’s mess while you’re navigating your own downturn will only severely impede your progress.
Another vital insight when you’re facing hardship:
One more massive takeaway: Embrace patience!
Oh, this was a monumental lesson for me. I desperately wanted to accelerate past the down times, to end them as quickly as possible, but this hurried approach ultimately backfired spectacularly.
Under what circumstances did you learn this, Dahlan? A fair question.
Here’s the honest answer:
"At 30, I found myself broke and without a home. My ex-partner and I moved to Bulgaria simply to survive. In that same tumultuous period, my adopted father was nearing the end of his life, and heartbreakingly, I never made it back to him before he passed."
Learning to be patient and understanding why you shouldn’t chase money are deeply interconnected lessons. But how do you cultivate such patience within yourself, or how did I manage it?
I started doing several specific things, especially during moments of acute impatience and despair:
- I regularly incorporated 10-minute guided meditation sessions into my routine.
- I created a "feel good file"—a cherished compilation of all the positive things I still possessed in those challenging moments: my health, my positive attitude, my functioning legs, that one book where I’d invested my last precious dollar.
- I developed "life designs files"—feel free to ask me about the templates if you’re curious.
- And of course, my daily training regimen consistently kept me grounded, centered, and sane amidst the chaos. I’ll be sharing my schedules on my channels.
Over time, these files became incredibly refined, powerful resources, and they continue to provide unwavering support whenever I need it.

Final Thought
Downtimes are undeniably uncomfortable, yet for any aspiring entrepreneur, confronting these periods head-on is not just important—it’s absolutely essential. They are the crucibles that forge your character and meticulously prepare you for the future you are actively building for yourself and for those around you.
And just to clarify, for anyone who might be misunderstanding, I’m not talking about minor annoyances like your phone battery dying during a call, your car running out of gas, or that time you got a little lost in a foreign city, or even when your feet ached selling services door-to-door at twelve years old.
I’m speaking of the profound, deeply resonant purpose you are striving to fulfill—your ultimate WHY. If you haven’t yet discovered it, perhaps a truly serious down period is exactly what you need to bring your ‘why’ into crystal-clear, undeniable focus.
I could delve into countless other elements that emerge during the ‘down’ time process, but for now, I’ll leave you with this potent idea:
Considering the deep personal and professional growth that invariably emerges from tough times, what specific system or strategy do you currently have in place to not just survive, but truly thrive and fundamentally transform during your own inevitable challenging periods?

Dahlan, an excellent job you did. I am sure many people can learn from you.
Thank you so much. Have a great day.
Regards, Gilbert
