After thirty years navigating the sales landscape, I’ve seen it all: soaring highs and significant lows. Those ‘down periods,’ as some call them, have often pulled me onto paths less traveled, away from the usual routes.
What you’ll discover on Dotcombaron comes straight from my own journey – the unique ways I’ve tackled challenges and seized openings. These aren’t textbook answers or everyday experiences. Think of this blog as a guidepost on your journey, offering insights and encouragement, rather than direct advice.
Today, I want to explore what’s truly essential to safeguard when life takes a dip, and the unexpected gifts these tough times can bring. Trust me, facing the thought of losing your home is a huge mental hurdle, leaving you vulnerable to those who might try to take advantage.
Every tale I share on Dotcombaron is a piece of my real-life story, written from my current home in Malta. So, let’s get right to it. Dahlan here, ready to share.
When chaos hits and you’re tossed a curveball, you’ll unearth three truly valuable assets:
- The people who genuinely have your back.
- The incredible depth of your own resilience.
- A sharper vision of the person you’re becoming.
The People Who Truly Care
Let’s jump into that first point, but without making this a somber read. In reality, hitting rock bottom can be one of the most transformative and even beautiful experiences you’ll face – whether it happens once, twice, or, as in my journey, a few times over.
When life strips away all the superficial layers, you gain crystal-clear sight of who truly stands with you. Beyond close family (if you have them), those who genuinely care will step up. On the flip side, anyone who was only around for the good times, perhaps hoping to benefit from your success, will show their true colors and simply disappear.
These periods of downturn, like any major life change, act as a vital clearing. They help you shake off everything that clutters your path and pulls you away from your real purpose. It might hurt at first, but with time, a profound sense of freedom will wash over you. You’ll feel dramatically better than before, truly energized by life, living the Dotcombaron way.
Remember that ‘friend’ who always ‘forgot’ their wallet, or the one who only showed up when there was a party? Deep down, you knew they were holding you back. Now? Those ties are finally, cleanly severed.
Unveiling Your Physical Fortitude
If you haven’t faced extreme hardship like homelessness or severe financial strain, I urge you to consider taking bigger risks. For those who do experience a tough patch, it’s not just your perspective that sharpens; you’ll also uncover the astounding resilience your body possesses.
What’s more, your inherent value to others often grows immensely. You’ll both observe and feel this shift. Life, ultimately, boils down to the energy and frequency you project into the world – a language far more powerful than words.
As the ancient proverb wisely states: “This too shall pass…”
Your body, in fact, can handle far more than the comforts of a soft bed, a ceramic stovetop, or a heated toilet seat. It can withstand remarkable stress, such as:
- Long, demanding walks – whether to the store, a critical meeting to solve a cash flow problem, or hours spent searching for a place to rest.
- Missing meals, a deliberate choice to funnel your last funds into a tool that could automate your outreach.
- For those unfamiliar with my routine, I maintain a consistent training regimen, primarily calisthenics and running, even when hungry. (A quick note: I’m not a dietitian, so please don’t try extreme hunger unless absolutely necessary.)
My personal encounters with significant hunger brought about a profound shift in how my body felt, completely transforming my relationship with food. It wasn’t just about eating what tasted good anymore. My focus turned keenly to the benefits: Does this meal fuel me? Will it keep my mind sharp? Can it sustain my energy? I started truly listening to my body’s cues – needing more protein here, extra carbs there, a greater intake of fruits… and maybe, just maybe, chocolate four times a year. (Truth be told, I never had much of a sweet tooth anyway.)
The Power of Mental Endurance
I’ve always embraced a “no-limit” mentality, an almost “screw it, let’s dive in” approach that emerged early in life. Now, at 42, I can confidently state:
“I am completely committed to growth, self-improvement, and delivering undeniable value, no matter the obstacles, the hardship, or the situation. I will succeed and fulfill my purpose.”
Navigating the Downward Spiral: What to Protect
My personal trials have taught me some crucial lessons, starting with this: Resist the urge to chase money.
I found that when my sole focus became money, I began attracting people with the same narrow outlook. Why is that an issue? It’s simple: those driven purely by quick cash rarely stick around for the long haul of building new ventures. Their sights are set on immediate gains, and the moment a project needs a pivot or a patient approach, they’re often gone, leaving you in a tougher spot than when you started.
So, instead of fixating on cash or launching new projects (unless it’s a genuine game-changer), consider stepping back and focusing on these actions:
- Take real time to reflect on what went wrong – acknowledge it, learn from it, and then put it behind you.
- Identify and gather all the ‘why-it-worked’ elements from your past successes, then elevate them with your current understanding.
- Use your previous experiences and newfound wisdom to significantly boost the value you bring to any interaction. Whether you’re struggling or thriving, offering true value often ensures your fundamental needs are met.
As I shared, my personal circumstances often push beyond the usual limits because I’m prepared to commit myself completely to my purpose. But here’s a truth: most people have more advantages than they often recognize. Let me give you a few examples:
- Do you have family? That’s already a step up from where I’ve been.
- Do you know your parents and see yourself in them? That’s two steps ahead.
- Are you driving a car, even with financial hurdles? That’s three steps ahead.
- Do you know where you’ll sleep tonight? That’s four steps ahead.
I could go on, but the bottom line is most readers are in a far stronger position than I was when starting over. If you are among the smaller group facing extreme difficulty, please reach out – we should talk about potential joint ventures.
(I’m always searching for that rare, truly driven individual!)
A vital warning: Keep ‘knuckleheads’ out of your orbit before their negative actions and toxic thinking start to affect you.
They’ll absorb your knowledge, steal your ideas, and, most importantly, deplete your valuable energy and time.
I know you likely have a strong sense of empathy and a desire to share, but be mindful of that trait. Hold it back for a bit, at least until you’re in a position where you can comfortably spare moments on someone who’s merely wasting your time.
So, how do you keep these draining influences at bay?
Here are a few tips on how I separate the unproductive from the genuinely motivated.
First, a dose of reality: truly driven individuals are uncommon and often found all over the world. Absorb that truth.
Here’s my top 5 filter list:
- People who are late right from the start – 10 minutes late without a word? You’re done.
- People who read your message but take days to reply? You’re out.
- People who constantly find excuses to avoid acting on agreed-upon tasks? You’re out.
- People who invent reasons to skip their physical training? You’re out.
- Watch who they associate with and how they treat everyone around them.
You absolutely must set firm boundaries here. If someone can’t handle basic responsibilities, they certainly won’t handle serious challenges well. You have to protect your future self, even if it means making tough choices and stepping away from those who thrive on slacking. Don’t feel bad about it, because slackers will invariably pull you down and leave you to clean up their problems. And during your own tough times, tidying up someone else’s mess will only block your path forward.
Another vital realization when navigating hardship:
Patience! This was a monumental lesson for me. I was desperate to escape my low points quickly, but that urgency often backfired.
You might ask, “Under what circumstances did you learn this, Dahlan?” A great question, and here’s the honest answer:
“At 30, I was broke and homeless. My ex-partner and I relocated to Bulgaria just to survive. Tragically, my adopted father was nearing his end then, and I couldn’t make it back to him before he passed.”
Learning patience and resisting the chase for money are deeply connected. So, how do you nurture patience within yourself? How did I do it?
I started implementing specific practices, especially when impatience and despair began to creep in:
- I regularly turned to 10-minute guided meditation sessions.
- I built a “feel good file” – a collection of every positive thing I still possessed: my health, my mindset, my working legs, even that single book where I’d put my last dollar.
- I developed “life designs files.” (If you’re curious about the templates, just ask!)
- And naturally, my daily training routine was a constant anchor, keeping me grounded and mentally strong. I’ll be sharing my workout schedules very soon.
With time, these personal “files” evolved into incredibly powerful resources, offering steadfast support whenever I need to lean on them.
Final Thought
Downturns are undoubtedly tough, but for any ambitious entrepreneur, facing them is non-negotiable. They mold your character and equip you for the future you’re actively constructing for yourself and those close to you. And just to be clear, I’m not talking about a dead phone battery, running out of gas, getting lost in a new city, or even the aches from door-to-door sales as a kid. I’m talking about the deep, meaningful purpose you’re striving to achieve – your ultimate WHY. If you haven’t found it yet, a significant down period might be precisely what you need to bring that “why” into sharp, undeniable focus.
I could explore countless other elements that surface during these challenging times, but I’ll leave you with this: If you’re genuinely navigating a serious downturn and need practical guidance, or perhaps a proven mobile-first system to generate sales, reach out! Final Thought
Considering the profound growth that can emerge from challenging times, what specific system or strategy have you put in place to not just survive, but truly thrive and transform during your own inevitable down periods?

Dahlan, an excellent job you did. I am sure many people can learn from you.
Thank you so much. Have a great day.
