I often hear people talk about what they want, what they expect, or what they demand. Whether it’s in a casual conversation, a live stream, or a direct message, there’s a common thread: an expectation for things to be given without first putting in the effort or providing value. But here’s what I’ve learned over the years, and what I believe is a fundamental principle for success in any aspect of life: Never demand or ask for anything if you’re not willing to put up value upfront.
The Problem: A Culture of Demanding Upfront
Value upfront isn’t just a nicety; it’s a doorway. It opens so many more opportunities than simply waiting, hoping, or worse, demanding. I was on a live stream recently, and someone told me to ‘answer my question and shut up.’ This is a classic example of demanding upfront. This person didn’t offer any value, didn’t know me, and expected me to cater to their immediate request. It’s not just live streams; I see it in direct messages too.
Some people will message me, demanding a quick answer on a topic I might not even be familiar with. Or they assume I know exactly what they’re busy with and what they want. They’re often not very clear about their own intent. They’re holding back, maybe even from themselves, and sometimes, they don’t truly know what they want.
This demanding culture also extends to personal relationships and even business. I once made the mistake of idealizing someone upfront in a relationship. I ‘extended my approach,’ giving without really knowing what I was getting or expecting in return. That’s a mistake I’ll never make again. It taught me that you can’t glorify or idolize a person or an outcome without first understanding the true value exchange.
The Solution: Give Value, Be Clear, Build Resilient Mindset
1. Pay the Price Upfront
- **Be Proactive:** Instead of waiting, start doing the work. Invest your time, energy, and resources first.
- **My Approach:** For every venture, whether it’s a new project or even personal interactions, I put in upfront work. This means doing a little research, understanding what the other person might need or like, and not making assumptions.
2. Clarity of Intent
- **Know What You Want:** You need to be crystal clear about your goals and intentions. What are you trying to achieve? What do you want your life, your day, your week, your month to look like if you didn’t have to work a traditional job? Most people don’t know this, and that’s a huge hurdle.
- **Vision Before Action:** When I start new projects, I don’t just visualize the end result; I put the entire workflow in place upfront. This is about establishing a clear path before you even take the first step.
3. Cultivate a Resilient Mindset
- **Dedication & Discipline:** Success isn’t handed to you overnight. It requires dedication, discipline, and consistent effort. For a ‘job,’ you might just go through the motions, play on your phone, and go home. But for true freedom and growth, you need to be engaged and committed.
- **Embrace ‘Stress’**: When everything becomes too comfortable, you stop growing. A little ‘stress’ or stimulus is necessary to push past plateaus and continuously evolve. I’ve lost everything three times in my life, and each time, I’ve had to brutally up-scale. That process is brutal, it messes with your mind, but it never stops unless you settle for mere survival.
4. Build Practical, Duplicable Workflows
- **Simplified Systems:** I’m creating a free membership site with simplified videos (5-15 minutes long) that explain every segment of a process. My goal is to empower anyone, with just a phone, a brain, and ten fingers, to build 24/7 digital assets.
- **The Power of Small Steps:** If you dedicate just 15 minutes a day for the first thirty days, then level up for the next thirty, you’ll start to see ‘light at the end of the tunnel.’ You’ll understand how paying the price upfront, consistently, opens doors you didn’t even know were there.
It’s better to have a plan in place. It’s better to ask yourself, ‘If I didn’t have to go to school or work anymore, what would I do? How would my day, my week, my month look?’ Many people don’t know this. When someone in Malta told me they needed €50,000 to stop working, I asked them, ‘What would you do with it? What product or service would you sell?’ They didn’t know yet. This is the issue.
I’ve been in this ‘game’ for over 37 years. I always put in the upfront work, whether it was selling door-to-door cleaning bicycles (and visualizing knocking on those doors days in advance) or launching a mega-project now in Malta. I don’t operate from a bossy position; my style is about leading by example and showing what’s possible through resilient action. My content isn’t for the soft-hearted, it’s for those willing to embrace dedication and discipline.
Summary: Pay the Price Upfront, Map it Out, and Grow!
If you want something in life, pay the price upfront. Map it out. This means investing your time, effort, and even capital before you expect any returns. Understand that genuine growth requires a shift in mindset, continuous dedication, and the discipline to execute your plans, even when it feels brutal. This is the path to freedom and unlocking your full potential.
